About armadillo

Despite their short legs, they are quite fast. They measure about 75 centimeters long, including the tail. The armor shells of these animals consist of leathery plates with sharp, long claws.

Recent research suggests that armadillos are the descendants of a genus of giant armored mammals known as Glyptodonts, which split 35 million years ago. This is much more recent than previously thought.

The claws on their forefeet are heavy enough to dig burrows, and they can dig burrows wide enough for their bodies to fit in. Even though they have five toes on each foot, their burrows are only as wide as their bodies.In addition to their claws, up to five toes are equipped with heavy digging claws on their forefeet.

No matter if it's bone or horn, the epidermal skin plate is made up of short, interlocking scales of dermal bone.
