About armadillo

Despite having short legs, they are capable of moving quite rapidly. An armadillo measures about 75 cm, including the tail. Their armor shells are made up of leathery plates with sharp, long claws for digging.

A genetic study indicates armadillos could have descended from a genus of giant armored mammals called the glyptodonts, which diverged about 35 million years ago, a much more recent divergence than previously thought.

A large part of the armadillo's diet is derived from digging and finding food with their claws, then digging burrows to live in. Even though arms are equipped with five toes on each foot, they only dig one burrow the width of their body. On their forefeet, three to five of their toes have heavy digging claws.

An epidermal skin plate, either made from bone or covered in horn, is covered in short, overlapping scales of dermal bone.

Recent genetic research suggests the lineage of armadillos could include an extinct group of giant armored mammals known as glyptodonts, which diverged some 35 million years ago, more recently than previously thought.

Armedillos have very poor eyesight, and rely on their understanding of smell to find food.  They dig and find food with their claws, then dig burrows to make their homes. Despite having five clawed toes on each foot, they only dig a single burrow the width of the animal's body. On their forefeet, three to five of their toes have heavy digging claws.

A plate of dermal bone is covered in short, overlapping scales of epidermal skin, either made of bone or covered in horn.
