Lens flares occur when light is scattered or flared by a lens system, often in response to a bright light, resulting in sometimes undesirable artifacts in the image. The light is scattered by the imaging mechanism itself, such as through internal reflection and forward scatter due to material imperfections in the lens. Lenses with a large number of elements, such as zoom lenses, tend to exhibit more flare because they contain a relatively large number of interfaces where internal scattering may occur. These mechanisms differ from focused image generation mechanisms, which rely on the rays from refraction of light reflected from the surface of the subject.
