Cucumbers are creeping vines that root in the ground and wrap around supports with thin, spiraling tendrils, growing up trellises or other supports.The plant will also root in a soilless medium, in which case the vine will sprawl along the ground in lieu of a supporting structure. The vine has large leaves that cover the fruit.

Fruits of typical cucumber cultivars are cylindrical in shape, but elongated with tapering ends, and may reach a length of 62 centimeters (24 inches) and a diameter of 10 centimeters (4 inches).

A cucumber is composed of 95% water. It is classified as a pepo in botanical terms, a type of berry with a hard outer rind and no internal divisions. However, like tomatoes and squashes, cucumbers are often consumed as vegetables.
