On June 24 every year, people celebrate Sao Joao, a Catholic festival in Goa that is celebrated in a strange way that involves jumping into, and swimming in, wells, streams, and ponds as a way of paying tribute to St. John the Baptist.

Sao Joao is a celebration of St. John the Baptist's birthday. St. John was the son of St. Elizabeth, a relative of Mary, the mother of Jesus.On 24 June is celebrated this feast, which is significant because it occurs three months after the feast of the Annunciation (25 March).
