Seibert's animation incubator series Random! Cartoons at Nickelodeon Animation produced the TV series, which aired on Nicktoons in 2007.Nickelodeon executives passed on Nickelodeon's option after the short became a viral hit on the Internet, but Cartoon Network bought a full-length series from Seibert and Ward, which premiered March 11, 2010.Cartoon Network broadcast the show from April 5, 2010 to September 3, 2018.

A variety of sources inspired the series, including the role-playing video game Dungeons & Dragons.Storyboarding artists, based on rough outlines, decide the action and dialogue for episodes based on the hand-drawn animation.A single episode of a television show takes roughly eight to nine months to finish, so multiple episodes are created simultaneously.Members of the cast recorded their lines in group sessions, and the series regularly employed guest actors to play minor and recurring characters. The show is usually broadcast in pairs to fill a half-hour time slot. Each episode lasts approximately eleven minutes.
