There are generally many forms of storing and recording information on books, including writings and drawings, but they are also used for storing and recording any kind of information that can be readable and writable. Codex is a technical term used to describe the physical arrangement of a book. A book is typically a bound version of a number of pages with a cover on the back and front for protection. As a written form, a leaf is defined as a single sheet, while a page is defined as a side of the leaf. In the historical times when the hand-held physical supports for extended records and compositions were available, the codex was dominated by scroll.

There are two ways books can be defined: restricted and unrestricted. A restricted sense of a book can be defined as a self-contained section or part of a larger composition. This term originated from historical times when long works were written on different scrolls whose contents were identified by their titles. Unrestricted definition defines it in the exact opposite manner, in terms of the present. It states that a book will be composed of smaller parts and chapters.
