As part of commemorating the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (June 24), Festas Juninas (Johannine Festivals) are the annual Brazilian celebrations adapting European Midsummer ceremonies. They take place during the month of June.During the month of June, the Portuguese introduced these celebrations, which were introduced during the Colonial period (1500-1822).A majority of the celebrations take place on the eves of Saints Anthony, John the Baptist, and Peter, the thirteenth century Catholic saints.

Brazilian caipiras practice the festival mostly as children dressed as farm boys with large straw hats, while women wear red-checkered dresses and pigtails, freckles, and painted gap teeth.

Throughout the festival, dances revolve around "quadrilha". Most of these dances originate from 19th-century Europe, which were brought by the Portuguese.
