A variety of species of ants were found in the fossil record across the globe during the latest and earliest Cretaceous period, suggesting they may have descended from wasps. Ant species began to diversify when flowering plants appeared in the Cretaceous period.

Among ants there are several types of colony sizes, ranging from small ones consisting of one or two predatory ants to colonies that number in the millions.  

In addition to being called a "superorganism," ant colonies are also known as collective entities, such as an ant colony. Queens and multiple drones are collectively known as gynes (queens).

Similarities such as these have inspired inspiration and study for centuries, as have the division of labor and effective communication among members in human societies.
